If you're feeling tired all the time, don't have the energy to exercise and can't be bothered cooking healthy meals every day in order to assist your weight loss efforts, then something needs to be done. The first step is to determine why you're always tired and then takes steps to overcome the feelings of tiredness and boost your energy level!
Sleep
The first area of your life that you should examine if you're feeling tired
all the time is sleep. When you sleep your body goes through the
processes
of repair, recuperation, replenishment and recovery. However, there are
several reasons why these processes may not occur as efficiently as they
should and as a result you don't get the quality of sleep you need in
order to wake up feeling refreshed and energized.
Here are some of the reasons why you may not be getting the quality of sleep you need each night: your body is too warm, your room isn't dark enough, you eat food close to bed time, you drink alcohol in the evenings, you go to bed feeling hungry, your pillow or mattress does not suit your body, you're a shift worker, your living environment is too noisy at night, you're not sleeping long enough, you are feeling stressed often, your partner/ child wakes you up during the night, etc.
Of course there are many other reasons why you may not be getting the amount of quality sleep your body needs each night but these are the main areas for most people. If you notice that any of the possible causes in the above list are things that you experience in your life on a regular basis, then you may want to find ways to overcome them or at least limit their impact as much as possible.
When it comes to sleep, especially if you're a shift worker, not
sleeping enough (6 hours a night max.) or you're traveling through
different time zones,
then I suggest using a 'melatonin' supplement. You only need to take
1-3mg before going to bed and I've found that it works really well. I've
also noticed that it is
far more effective than the homeopathic version.
Unfortunately, melatonin is not available 'over-the-counter' here in Australia so you will have to get it sent to you from the US or New Zealand. Don't worry, it's not illegal, it's just not permitted for sale here in Australia. You are still allowed to use it for personal use only. I really question some of the laws surrounding supplements here in Australia. They are really tough without any real justification for being so but that's another story.
Eating Habits
Your eating habits also play a major role in determining whether or not you feel tired all the time. Eating close to bed time
has already been mentioned
but there are many other factors relating to food that need to be
considered. For example, eating poor quality (fast food or 'junk' food)
will definitely have an impact on how your body functions as well as
your energy levels.
If the majority of your foods are of poor quality and by this I mean they lack nutrient density, i.e. they don't contain enough vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, then it is highly likely that you will feel tired all the time. It is simply impossible for your body to function at optimum levels without these essential micronutrients.
If you're finding that the majority of foods you're eating are of poor quality and this doesn't necessarily mean you're eating fast food or 'junk' foods all the time, it simply means that the food you're eating may be packaged or processed or has been sitting on the shelf in a store for extended periods of time, which means the nutrient content of the food is likely to be low.
Low nutrient content may also be the result of food being picked before it is ripe because it needs to be transported. There are many reasons why the food you get may be low in nutrient density and some of these reasons are out of your control. Therefore, it just makes sense to use a multivitamin/ mineral supplement every day.
MultiBoost is a good example of a high quality, cost-effective multivitamin/ mineral supplement that you can include in your diet every day in order to ensure that all the nutrients your body requires are supplied in your diet. This is a very simple way to avoid feeling tired all the time.
Having a diet that is predominantly carbohydrate (from calories not volume), especially refined carbohydrate, will cause you to have greater fluctuations in your blood sugar level compared to a diet that is predominantly protein. Therefore, it is important that you find ways to keep your blood sugar as stable as possible throughout the day in order to maintain your energy levels and avoid feeling tired all the time.
The easiest ways to do this are by having 'complete meals', selecting more low and medium-density carbohydrate sources as opposed to the high-density carbohydrate sources, and by using glucose disposal agents. GI Factor is a combination of powerful glucose disposal agents and is a great supplement to use in order to maintain stable blood sugar levels.
Fitness Level
It is amazing how many people say that they feel tired all the time and
therefore don't have enough energy to exercise. In some cases this is
definitely true.
However, it is important to keep in mind that by pushing yourself to do
some exercise, particularly aerobic exercise, you will be able to
improve your fitness level and as a result, boost your energy level as
well.
So if you're looking for some simple ways to boost your energy level and overcome feeling tired all the time, try some of the strategies mentioned here. They can really make a difference in how your body feels as well as help you gain the energy you need to burn off body fat and lose weight fast!
