Could Your Clutter Be Keeping You Fat?

The other day I was grabbing a bowl from my cabinet... getting ready to make some salad for dinner that evening. As I stood back and looked at the shelves, a nice feeling came over me. I was looking at how nice the dishes and bowls were in there and was impressed as I looked around my kitchen at how clean and neat it looked!

It really was now a pleasure to prepare and cook meals in there. I also now take the time to put my food on beautiful plates and make a beautiful place setting. But, let me tell you it was not always this way... far from it!

When I started to lose weight and feel better, I all of a sudden got the urge to purge! While trying to prepare and serve meals in the past, I got so frustrated with my cabinets, because I could never find what I wanted and it was always a struggle to pull out what I needed. Do you have the cabinets from hell?
-->

Have you ever opened up your cabinet and a bunch of plastic containers come flying out, dumping all over the floor? That has happened to me A LOT! Well enough! That Saturday I pulled everything out of every cabinet and used my dining room table as a staging area. When I saw just how much STUFF was in there, I almost fainted. No wonder I could never find what I needed... there was twice as much stuff, as room!

If you know anything about the Pareto Principal, you would know that 80% of the time, you use only 20% of your stuff! So, that means, 80% of the items in your cabinet are hardly ever used. So I decided that I would get rid of, or store, any items that I had not used in the last 30 days... Now this was no easy task..LOL We are so attached to our STUFF, we just cannot seem to part with it.
So I did stick to my rule, and either stored in the garage on a shelf, or donated everything that needed to go. I picked up some beautiful shelf paper, and started to put back and re-arrange all the items, I was keeping. I was AMAZED at the transformation! It looked like a work of art! It was actually a pleasure going into any kitchen cabinet or drawer.

This made my meal preparation so much easier, faster, and more fun. Everything I used on a daily, weekly basis was in arms reach, and easily found. I could now prepare lunches and dinners, with ease.
No more pot lids, plastic containers, un matching glasses and cups, flying all over the place. I even got rid of anything chipped or marked in any way.

I set up the cutlery drawer with the knives I used most often, so they were sharp and clean, and easily found. When I need to chop vegetables, my beautiful new cutting board is on the counter, and I can just grab the appropriate knife for the job.

I no longer have to fight with shelves of old small appliances, that I never used and not even sure when I bought them.

I replaced all the boxes and packages in the food cupboard with glass canning jars. They are the best thing ever. They keep everything sealed air tight and fresh. They are easily washed in the dishwasher. You can see everything, and it all looks so clean and neat. I store my nuts, seeds, rice, coconut flour, whole-wheat pastas, etc. in them.

I now even use them in the fridge for all my chopped vegetables, so I can just grab and go. I chop onions, peppers, garlic, celery, and always have fresh chopped veggies at my fingertips. I store all my greens (spinach, arugula) in the bigger jars and they keep much longer.

I hope I have inspired to do a kitchen cabinet make over. It will make your weight loss goals much easier, when everything is easy and fast!
A big plus, that I never even mentioned... you would feel inspired to bring this to other areas as well. Think bedroom closet!
I will discuss in future articles about other ways clutter effects your life, in ways that would surprise you.

To your good health!
Kathy
